White-spotted sable moths are often found visiting flowers in open field, roadsides, and disturbed areas, where they are adept at hiding underneath the foliage of various plants. Larvae feed primarily on Goldenrod (Solidago).

Range: northern North America; Newfoundland to Northwest Territories, south in the west to Colorado and California, south in the east to North Carolina. Also throughout Eurasia.
