Ants – Lasius alienis

Ants – Lasius alienis

Lasius ant worker and ant larva

A Lasius ant minor worker moves larva to safety after I rudely disturbed their nest in a rotten log. Live ants photographed at DuPage County, Illinois, USA. Size: 3-4mm

Lasius ants

Major and minor worker ants work to rapidly hide their larvae from predators and sunlight after I removed some bark from their rotten log nesting ground. Ants are perhaps the most numerous creatures on earth. It has been conjectured their worldwide total biomass equals or exceeds the entire human population. You have to hand it to the girls – they are nearly blind, and cannot hear, but they construct one of the most elaborate societies on earth, with no one in charge, ruled entirely by chemical communications.
