Venusta Orchard Spider - Leucauge venusta
Family Tetragnathidae
Live adult spiders photographed at Winfield, Illinois USA.
The species name venusta comes from the Latin "beautiful", and I can certainly say this spider lives up to its name.

Venusta Orchard Spider

Spiders in the family Tetragnathidae are commonly called long-jawed spiders, or longjawed orbweavers. The family Tetragnathidae is newly separated from the family Araneidae. Both families build orb webs, but they use different construction techniques. Tetragnathids build orb webs with open centers while members in family Araneidae build orb webs with dense center. I find the Venusta spiders most often in low underbrush in dappled shade.
